Author: MIDs, or Mobile Internet Devices, are hand-held computers that are somewhere between a smartphone & a full PC. They are like netbooks without the laptop form factor, or word processor. They are meant primarily for the internet. Most MIDs run open source, Linux based, architectures. There is one, however, that does not. The Samsung Mondi runs Windows Mobile 6.1. Many people don’t care for Windows Mobile 6.1, so dressing it up & making it look pretty isn’t going to cut it in the MID space. More on my thoughts on this topic in the video.

The Museum of Computing is devoted to the history of computing and digital development. It was the first physical museum of it’s kind in the UK dedicated to the history of computing. It is based in the centre of Swindon at Theatre Square. The Museum is not simply a repository of artefacts, but has active displays as well as providing a forum for the provision of lectures. There is a mixture of permanent and temporary displays, many exhibits of which have been loaned by companies and other collectors.The Museum is keen to show former products of commercial computer companies, and welcomes such offers.

Students from Kealakehe Elementary in Kona, Hawaii (The Big Island) head out into the field with famous ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau’s granchildren Philippe and Alexandra to record data on the bahavior of Humpback whales. They used handheld linux-based computers from LearningSoft LLC. to send their data to NOAA as part of a pilot program for LearningSoft’s Indigo educational product. Pretty cool stuff, and the kids seem to have loved it.
